OFF CAMERA FLASH WORKSHOP - Beginner to Intermediate
Off-camera lighting should be fun, not frightening. Too many people throw up their hands in surrender before even trying to understand this powerful tool which can take a photo from plain to powerful. As a self-taught photographer, I have a unique and relatively 'non-technical' approach to lighting and exposure techniques. In almost 30 years as a photojournalist for newsrooms throughout Michigan, my lighting skills were honed across a wide variety of challenging scenarios to produce front-page worthy photos. These same methods are essential components of my kit and help me balance ambient illumination with artificial lighting to dial up the drama of even the simplest photograph.
I am happy to have the support of the amazing local Michigan company Photo Evo Pro! They have some awesome freebie gifts and a couple of great giveaways for all the participants of the workshop. I love working with local, quality companies!
When and Where It Will Happen
The Workshop will be on July 13th, 2019 from 1pm to 4pm in GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN. We have a gorgeous venue chosen in the Cascade area near the Thornapple River. The location features wooded areas and riverside docks for you to take beautiful photographs
WHAT IT WILL COST
For this workshop it will be $85 per person. We will have light snacks and beverages and helps pay our awesome models, hairstylist, and make-up artist.
Partners (husbands, wives, boyfriends, girlfriends etc) are an important part of making a successful business as a photographer, even if they do nothing more than support you emotionally. As a result of that partners are welcome to join the workshop for a donation of $10 (to cover drinks & snacks.) They also may get roped into being models during the workshop, and they will for sure be holding equipment!
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
I will have triggers and flash to use for the Nikon system. IF you do not use Nikon it would be best to have a tripod, a light stand equipped to hold one flash, a speed light or flash that can function in manual (TTL will work but defeats the purpose of this workshop) and last but most importantly a way to trigger your flash off camera (such as a GoDox, Flashpoint or a Yongnuo trigger). We will have a limited amount of Godox triggers, flashes, and stands to borrow for this Meetup. Please contact me if you need some of this equipment.
WHAT WE WILL BE DOING
In this course, I'll break down several of the necessary techniques involved with off-camera flash lighting to help you become best friends with your Speedlight! Through intensive, hands-on practice, we'll explore everything from basic flash settings all the way to mixing "found lighting" with "fill lighting”. We will start with a short discussion about OCF, techniques, settings, along with quality & types of light.
During the second half of the workshop we will break up into groups to photograph our models. I will to enable you to build your portfolio and build your lighting skills. Unlike other workshops, I will not be dictating the lighting set up. Instead, I will empower you to build the lighting, posing, and execution using the awesome step by step workflow that I will teach you. I will be on hand to guide and support you on every step.
Afterwards, we will regroup and look at each others photos. I will personally be available for one to one help during the photo session.
SIZE OF CLASSES
I believe in hands on experience, so classes are kept to 10 participants per class! Don't worry though! If we fill a class we will attempt to schedule another one for the next day!
We can also set up a venmo payment, cash, or check payment also.
Once we receive your registration you will receive an email that will give you all the details and info for the day!

THANK YOU FOR THEIR SUPPORT
Photo Evo Pro is a large portrait and commercial photographic lab. Established in 1952 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, we offer high quality printing of photographic images by investing in the most advanced technology and by employing industry qualified technicians and knowledgeable customer service representatives. Our volume pricing structure leads the industry. We do not require volume ordering from one image or file, but allow multiple images or files to be added together in one order to qualify for volume pricing. Our mixed units are also another reason photographers partner with Photo Evo Pro. Offering you the most value for your dollar is very important to us as a company. We post monthly specials on our website for your future planning and savings. Both the photographic and press printed specials have been very popular for ordering studio samples as well as being incentives for scheduling special photographic events or marketing new products. We have heard many times that our large prints and competition prints are the best in the country. We take pride in our systems which include numerous daily calibrations for consistent quality. Photo Evo Pro was the first to offer free test prints for calibrating your monitor to our systems so you may place your orders within our direct output classification, our least expensive option for printing your images. We are also the first to offer color correction and layout tests for press printed products. Photo Evo Pro is proud to service portrait and commercial clients from around the world. If you have any suggestions for products or services that we do not offer at this time, we will be happy to listen to your thoughts and ideas. We want to be your photographic partner and we appreciate your business.
